Improvisa – Life in Motion
Improvisa – Life in Motion
(2021/22; resident artist)
IMPROVISA - Life in Motion project is a collaboration between 5 European organizations: MyDocumenta (coordinator), Eccom - Idee per la Cultura, Galeria Labirynt, Muzej novejše zgodovine Slovenije I National Museum of Contemporary History and EMST Athens, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme for the years 2021 and 2022. The project explores the potential of the audio-visual improvisation driven by mobile technologies, through participatory experiences aimed to engage audiences with difficult access to culture, such as migrants and inmates.
As a resident artist, my job was to create a workshop that made use of the museums' collections and the Improvisa App, as well as to implement it in the different museums. My workshop was called "BEAUTIFUL NOISES" and its main goal was to experiment with the human voice as a medium for creating music and sounds, using it in an extended way. By combining sound samples and visuals with the IMPROVISA App, participants were encouraged to create their compositions and feel how our spoken, whispered and onomatopoeic voices can be part of an artistic process.
The visuals for each museum workshop were previously created by me, and consist of visual collages using the museum collection. In short, the visuals represent the creation or change of the same collage and each of them has a sound base associated with it – one album with 10 audiovisual samples was created per museum. During the workshop, participants enhanced the pre-existing audiovisual samples with sound recordings created by the group, creating in this way their own unique album to improvise with.
The workshop had three parts: introduction to the use of the human voice as a medium for sound creation – where we listened to music with extended vocal techniques and made group improvisation exercises; sound recordings for our Improvisa album; and creation in Improvisa App with our album.
